Platinum #145 - DOOM (2016)

Finally got around to playing the first installment of the Doom revival series after hearing nothing but great praise. I started with the multiplayer, which surprisingly still has a mostly stable player base despite its age. It is one of the more fun online multiplayers I’ve done for a game. Tons of game modes, maps, and weapons make it enjoyable long into the trophy grind. Most of the online grind is for DLC trophies, but the amount of time I had to spend grinding was about 27 hrs, about half of my total playtime.

The single player campaign is very fun. I love how the Doomguy has such a flippant attitude for everything and everyone in the story. “Screw your exposition and suggestions, I’m getting rid of the demons how I want to!” I enjoyed the lore bits and pieces and I look forward to seeing the story continue once I get to Eternal.

The gunplay is great, it’s one of those games where you never stop moving, fights are super dynamic and take you all over the various arenas. Most of the weapons are useful throughout the whole game and are all fun to use (the starting pistol is kinda useless and the first shotgun gets replaced by something much better however). Aside from progressing through the levels, there are tons of collectibles and level specific challenges. Every perk and weapon has mastery challenges with them, so you are never wanting for upgrades to strive for.

Now for my one disappointment. I’ve always heard how great the music is in this game, but I think it was just fine. It’s very techno/heavy metal in style, but it didn’t hit for me like I was hoping it would. I did really like how in the Hell sections there would be a menacing choir chant as a musical cooldown after a fight.

If you’re in the market for a great FPS and haven’t touched DOOM 2016 yet, definitely go for it!
