I don't think the devs know what the game is about anymore. I'm not sure they even play their own game.
It was a lot better in 2018, just a small game about exploration with a chunky, intuitive interface. Then, instead of moving on to another game, they just kept redoing Astroneer. They completely removed weather events, got on consoles, went into microtransactions and cosmetics, and then they started adding a poorly-implemented mission system which completely fouled up the NGE for vets and then started cramming automation elements into a game that was never about automation. It feels very much like all later development is focused on engaging new players and nothing for actual play, which had been just a quiet sort of exploration with light survival elements.
I have 70+ hours in Astroneer, which is three or four playthroughs, and the game's just a complete hassle to play now, nothing like the game I bought in the first place.
