The 4A Engine is a graphics middleware engine developed by 4A Games for use in its video games Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, Metro Exodus, and Arktika.1. It supports Direct3D APIs 9 through 12, OpenGL 3.2, Nvidia PhysX, and Nvidia 3D Vision. The main men behind the development of this impressive engine is lead programmers and co-founders of 4A Games, Oles Shiskovtsov and Aleksandr Maksimchuk which previously worked with GSC Game World when they created S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. Since the first details on the specs of the 4A Engine were revealed and what it was supposed to utilize in Metro 2033, speculations if this was even possible started to arise. When the first footage of Metro 2033 was released, speculation about the game gave way to admiration due to its impressive visuals, which showcased the capabilities of the 4A Engine.
